Chapter Fifteen

As we closed in on the Federation, I became increasingly nervous. Human lives would be at stake. I had yet to hear of a plan from the Emperor. I was glad Bryce and I had made a plan of our own.

The Morag fleets were still in the Doegee system. If the Jatarians kept on their current course, they would go close by the Doegee system. Would it be close enough to sense the large fleet there? Would it make the Jatarians reconsider?

One Morag fleet already trailed behind us. They were far enough back that we couldn’t sense them with our scans, which meant the Jatarians couldn’t either. This was the original eighty ships that had been headed to the Demotrain system.

When we were half an hour out, I connected with the Morag in the Doegee system. A large Jatarian fleet is being followed by a Human scout ship. They will pass closely by the Doegee system. Prepare for engagement, if the Jatarians exit hyperspace. If not, prepare to enter hyperspace and follow the enemy fleet to their destination.

After putting my command into all the commanders’ minds, I sat back and relaxed. The Doegee system was still one day’s hyperspace travel from Tyrus and a little more than that from Falton Two.

Bryce, Ryan, and I were all in the cockpit, as we neared the Doegee system. “Running the long-range scans now,” Bryce said.

We knew a large Morag fleet was in the Doegee system. I wondered what the Jatarians would think of it. Would it intimidate them any?

“Scans reveal nearly six hundred ships in the system,” Bryce reported.

“Still another 150 Morag ships are inbound that haven’t arrived yet,” I added.

“When will we know if the Jatarians exit hyperspace?” Ryan asked.

“Within the next ten minutes,” Bryce replied.

We watched and waited. I doubted the Jatarians would exit hyperspace. This system wasn’t listed as part of the Federation. This was not a home to their enemy. I’m sure they were curious about the number of ships in the system though.

After the ten minutes had passed, and we saw no sign of the Jatarians in the Doegee system, I would signal to the Morag that it was time to follow the Jatarians into hyperspace.

I quickly connected with the commanders of the Morag fleets and ordered them into hyperspace. By the time they entered hyperspace, they would be out of range of the Jatarians’ scans. The Jatarians would have no idea the large fleet had followed them.

They would be under twenty minutes behind them. That lag would leave whichever system the Jatarians planned to attack slightly exposed for a short time, but it wasn’t likely long enough to do much harm. At least I hoped not.

Now I needed to connect with Jeffery again and update him on the progress.

Hi, Slade. How’re things going?

The Jatarians did not exit hyperspace in the Doegee system. I have the Morag following behind them now. We are approximately twenty-four hours out from Tyrus.

We are ready for them, whichever system they choose to attack.
